Four ways into the country.

A first choice

City, north, or coast.

The useful question is not “what is best in Thailand.” It is which constraint you accept. A Bangkok base puts temples and onward transport in one place, then asks you to cross a large city. Chiang Mai trades the sea for Lanna temples and highland days. Phuket and the islands trade city museums for boat plans that move when the sea does.

The guides name places from Tourism Authority of Thailand pages and, for World Heritage, from UNESCO. Time on the ground is an editorial suggestion, not an official programme. Nothing on this site is a package.

Read the four itinerary ideas

Tropical coast and limestone hills. Illustrative, not a confirmed beach.
Illustrative coast. Not a confirmed Phuket or Krabi viewpoint.

Itinerary ideas

Four paces, not four packages.

  1. Bangkok and Phuket A city start, a transfer day, and an unplanned day on the Andaman coast. Read the idea
  2. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Temples and highlands, then the northernmost province, with weather as the constraint. Read the idea
  3. Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Sukhothai Two capitals and a long transfer, with the heritage parks as the point. Read the idea
  4. A southern island route One mainland coast plus one island, and a fallback if the boat does not run. Read the idea
Mountain forest at sunset. Illustrative, not a confirmed Chiang Mai viewpoint.
Illustrative forest. Not a confirmed Doi Inthanon or Doi Suthep photograph.

Before you leave

Check the rule, not the rumour.

Temple dress, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, park tickets, and train times change. The practical guides point at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, UNESCO, the Fine Arts Department, the State Railway, and a Thai embassy note on the arrival card. They do not quote a price that this edition could not verify twice.
