A southern island route
One Andaman mainland coast, one island, and a refusal to add a third boat.
Choose the pair before you book
Pair A: Krabi (Ao Nang or Noppharat Thara) and Koh Phi Phi. Pair B: Krabi and Koh Lanta. Pair C: Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, only if you already want Phuket’s beaches more than Railay. Do not book all three pairs. The Gulf islands are a different sea and a different itinerary.
Overnight bases
Three nights at the mainland base you chose. Two nights on the island. The sixth night returns to the mainland if your flight leaves from Krabi or Phuket, or stays on the island if you have a boat that matches the flight with a margin. Lanta’s sixth night should not depend on a small-island day trip in May through October, because TAT says those islands are typically closed then.
Day by day
- Mainland arrival Beach, pier, nothing else. Learn which pier your island boat will use.
- Mainland limestone or a long beach Railay if you are in Krabi. A swim flag and Laem Phromthep if you are in Phuket. Not a preview boat to the island.
- A spare mainland day This day exists so the island transfer can move forward if tomorrow’s sea is wrong, or so you can rest if the transfer is on time.
- Transfer to the island One-way thinking, in the spirit of TAT’s Krabi advice that a one-way ticket is easier to change. Sleep on Phi Phi Don or on Lanta. Do not board a second cruise after the ferry.
- The island’s own day Phi Phi Le only if landings are open and the sea is calm. On Lanta, the west-coast beach or the cape, not a closed park island.
- Margin Either a second island morning and a late mainland return, or the return itself if the boat schedule is thin. The flight is not on this day unless you have hours to spare after the pier.
If the boat or the park changes
A cancelled island boat means you stay on the mainland and use the nights you can still move, or you wait one day if the room on the island can move too. You do not substitute a rough speedboat. A closed Maya Bay means you look from the boat or you stay on Phi Phi Don. A Lanta closure of Koh Rok or Koh Haa means Old Town and the cape. The route is finished when you have had one calm beach and one honest island day. It does not need a third province to feel complete.
