History and heritage

UNESCO listings and other historical places are not the same thing. This section keeps them apart, then sends you to the guide that matches the trip.

What is on the UNESCO list

UNESCO’s Thailand page lists nine World Heritage properties. Six are cultural: the Historic City of Ayutthaya (1991), the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns (1991), Ban Chiang Archaeological Site (1992), The Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments (2023), Phu Phrabat (2024), and Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat (2026). Three are natural: Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries (1991), the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex (2005), and the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex (2021).

The Sukhothai listing is not only the Sukhothai Historical Park. UNESCO’s title includes the associated historic towns, which are Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet. Ban Chiang is in Nong Han District, Udon Thani. Si Thep is a serial property in Phetchabun: the twin town, Khao Klang Nok, and Khao Thamorrat Cave.

What is historical, and not this list

Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima and Phanom Rung in Buriram are important Khmer-period places. A Tourism Authority of Thailand article from 9 January 2020 groups them with the historical parks. They do not appear among the nine names on UNESCO’s Thailand list, so this site does not call them World Heritage. Muang Sing in Kanchanaburi is the same kind of distinction: TAT recommends it; it is not one of the nine.

The natural properties are not temple days. Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng is a wildlife sanctuary system, including forest above Kanchanaburi. Khao Yai is the name travelers use; the World Heritage property is the wider Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex. Check which gate and which fee apply.

Information, not a checkout Sukhothai and Ayutthaya parks are published by the Fine Arts Department. Those pages are park information. This site did not find a single public checkout that matched both Fine Arts fee tables, so it does not quote a price.
