Three cities

Editorial itinerary

Bangkok, Ayutthaya, and Sukhothai

Two World Heritage cities and the modern capital, paced so Sukhothai is not an afternoon myth.

Overnight bases

Bangkok first, near the river temples. Then one night on Ayutthaya’s island so the park is not a round trip from the capital. Then two nights in new Sukhothai, close enough to cycle to the walls. A last Bangkok night only if the outbound flight is early. Si Satchanalai does not get its own hotel on this route.

Day by day

  1. Bangkok Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, or Wat Pho and Wat Arun. The point is to know what a living temple feels like before you see ruined ones.
  2. To Ayutthaya, then the park Travel in the morning. TAT’s “about 86 kilometres” is not a reason to start at noon. See two or three sites inside the historical park and sleep on the island. UNESCO lists the Historic City of Ayutthaya from 1991.
  3. Ayutthaya, unhurried Wat Phanan Choeng and Khun Phaen House if they are open, or a slower return to the main ruins. Do not start for Sukhothai at 16:00.
  4. Transfer to Sukhothai This day is the journey, by the rail and road combination you have checked. Book trains on D-Ticket. Arrive, eat, sleep. The park is tomorrow, when it is open and you are not.
  5. Sukhothai inner park Wat Mahathat and a bicycle loop of the walled city. UNESCO’s listing, from 1991, is the historic town and its associated towns. You are in the Sukhothai portion today.
  6. Wat Si Chum, then toward home Phra Achana in the morning if the zone is open. Then begin the return. Si Satchanalai stays on the map for another trip unless this day is somehow still empty at noon, which it will not be.

If a connection changes

If the ride to Sukhothai breaks the day, stay an extra night in Ayutthaya and delete Si Chum before you delete the inner park. If you arrive in Sukhothai late, the inner park moves intact to the next morning and the return shifts. Do not tour the walls in the last hour of light and call it done. Fees are paid at the Fine Arts gates. This itinerary does not quote them, because the published figures did not match across Fine Arts pages.
