Andaman coast

Phuket trip ideas

A coastal starting point on the Andaman Sea, and Thailand’s largest island according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Where to base yourself

Use TAT’s own contrast. The south is the busier coast. The north is the quieter one. This guide does not award a best beach.

PatongTAT names Patong among the island’s beaches. Choose it when you want services, food, and a night scene within walking distance, and you accept the crowds that come with that.
Kata or KaronAlso named by TAT. A step away from Patong’s density, still on the busier southern side. Better if you want a beach morning and a town that is not only a party.
Mai Khao and the northTAT names Mai Khao and describes the north as quieter. Choose it for space and longer shores. The trade-off is more riding to the southern piers and to Patong’s restaurants.

Places and experiences

  • A beach day with a flag. TAT says to look for a red flag before swimming. That is the most useful sentence on the destination page. If the flag is red, the beach is still a place to walk, not a place to argue with the water.
  • Laem Phromthep. TAT names the viewpoint. Go once, earlier than the tour buses if you can, and do not build every evening around it.
  • Patong, as a town. Use it for a meal and a walk even if you sleep elsewhere. It is a place TAT expects visitors to know, not a secret.
  • Kata and Karon, as beaches. Swim there on a day the flag allows, and keep the day free of a second long transfer.
  • Mai Khao. The northern beach in TAT’s list. Pair it with nothing else if you are staying in the south. The ride is the activity.
  • A boat day, only if the sea agrees. Phi Phi and other islands are separate trips. TAT’s Krabi page is frank that island boats are easier to change if you buy a one-way ticket. The same habit helps from Phuket: do not weld the return to a dinner reservation you cannot move.
  • Old Phuket town is the useful bad-weather morning: streets, coffee, and no boat. This edition does not attach a specific museum claim to it. The point is a plan that still feels like the island when the Andaman is the wrong place to swim. If you want a second coast, choose the southern island route and drop a Phuket hotel night rather than adding Samui. The Gulf is another journey.

A three-day pace

  1. Day one, the beach at your base. Learn the flag, the sun, and the food within walking distance.
  2. Day two, one outing. Laem Phromthep and a different beach, or a boat if the forecast is dull in the right way. Not both.
  3. Day three, empty. This is the day a red flag or a cancelled boat is allowed to take. If the sea is fine, repeat the best beach or take the outing you skipped.

If the weather turns

Stay on the island. Swap the boat for a town morning, a viewpoint if the road is open, and the beach without swimming. Do not replace a cancelled Phi Phi boat with a tighter speedboat the same afternoon. The Southern islands idea is built around that refusal.

Getting there and getting around

Phuket has its own airport, and it is also reached by road from the mainland. This page does not quote fares. On the island, rides between Patong, Kata, Karon, and Mai Khao are long enough to plan. Agree a taxi fare before you start if the car is not metered. Motorbikes are a common cause of injury on Thai islands; TAT’s Samui page says to wear a helmet and not to ride after drinking. That advice belongs here too.

Before you leave

  • Look at the swim flag every time you enter the water.
  • Check the marine forecast before any boat day.
  • This page does not sell tours, name inclusions, or quote prices.
