Isan travel guide

A regional guide to Thailand’s northeast, with Khorat as the gateway and Ban Chiang as a separate trip.

Where to base yourself

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Nakhon Ratchasima, also called Khorat, as Thailand’s largest province and the gateway to the lower northeast, about 260 kilometres from Bangkok. It points travelers to Khao Yai and to the Khmer history at Phimai. That is the practical first base. Udon Thani is the practical base for Ban Chiang, which UNESCO places in Nong Han District of that province. Do not try to make one hotel serve both.

Khorat cityThe right hub for Phimai and for arriving from Bangkok. Evenings are a city, not a ruin. The park is a drive away.
Pak Chong or a Khao Yai edgeStay here when the forest complex is the reason you came. TAT treats Khao Yai as the magnet. You then day-trip to Phimai only if the drive still looks kind in the morning.
Udon ThaniThe base for Ban Chiang. It is a different rail or road line from Khorat. Treat it as a second Isan trip, or as the trip, not as a scenic detour.

Named places

Around Khorat

  • Phimai. TAT and its 2020 historical-parks article describe Phimai as a major Khmer-period site and an old provincial center of the Angkorian world. It is not on UNESCO’s list of nine Thai World Heritage properties. See it as an archaeological park and confirm today’s hours locally. The 2020 article’s fees are too old to repeat.
  • Khao Yai. TAT calls Khao Yai Thailand’s oldest national park and associates it with World Heritage status. UNESCO’s inscription is the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, a natural property from 2005. Enter through the park, not through the convention text. Book ahead in the QueQ app if that park is using it, and read the 2023 government note before you rely on a blog for the fee.
  • The city and its markets. TAT mentions the scale of Khorat, its farms, and Pak Thong Chai’s silk tradition. Use a city hour for silk or a market if the park day is full. It will not replace Phimai.

Further Isan, on purpose

  • Ban Chiang. UNESCO’s entry describes a prehistoric mound in Udon Thani with evidence of farming and metalworking, inscribed in 1992. Go for the site and its museum, with modest expectations of “scenery.” Confirm what is open.
  • Phanom Rung, Buriram. The 2020 TAT article describes the hilltop temple and a sunrise alignment through the gates on dates in early April and September. Those dates are the article’s. Confirm them before you travel for the alignment. Phanom Rung is not one of the nine World Heritage names.
  • Phu Phrabat. A 2024 cultural World Heritage property on UNESCO’s Thailand page, tied to Dvaravati stone tradition. It sits in this regional conversation because it is northeastern heritage, and it still needs its own day and its own reading of the UNESCO page.

Two realistic routes

Route A, lower Isan. Bangkok to Khorat. Day one, arrive and stay in the city. Day two, Phimai and back. Day three, Khao Yai, sleeping at the park edge if the gates require an early start. Then return to Bangkok. This is the route that fits a first Isan visit.

Route B, Ban Chiang. A separate trip aimed at Udon Thani. One day for the site, one day of slack for transport. Do not stitch Route B onto the end of Route A unless you have several more days and you enjoy long rides. The map is not the fatigue.

A Buriram extension for Phanom Rung replaces the Khao Yai day. It does not join it.

If the weather turns

Khao Yai in heavy rain is a park that may close trails or simply be a poor walk. Use Phimai or the city instead. Ban Chiang is more forgiving of weather and less forgiving of a rushed arrival. If the train or bus slips, let the site move to the next morning rather than arriving at dusk and calling it a visit.

Getting there and getting around

Khorat is the transport hub TAT describes, by road and by rail from Bangkok. Book rail on D-Ticket and read the station names. Inside the region, Phimai, the park, Buriram, and Udon Thani are drives or separate public rides. There is no useful single “Isan bus” that sees all of the places above between breakfast and dinner.

Before you leave

  • Decide which route you are on before you book the room.
  • Open the UNESCO page for Ban Chiang or the forest complex if that status is why you are going.
  • Leave the 2020 admission prices in 2020.
