West of Bangkok
A river town close to Bangkok, with war history on the Kwai and forests and falls that need a day of their own.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand places the town where the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai meet and form the Mae Klong. It describes the town as a place to watch the river, and the province as the base for falls, dams, and war history. It also says the trip from Bangkok is about two hours by road, with rail including weekend sightseeing trains.
A third day is Mon Bridge or Muang Sing, not both, and not the wildlife sanctuary unless you already hold permission.
Waterfalls in heavy rain can close. If they do, stay with the town, the museum, and Muang Sing if it is open. Do not drive the western road in a storm to salvage a photo. Weekend rail trips, which TAT mentions, are a pleasant arrival only if you have checked that week’s train. They are not a secret daily service.
Road is straightforward from Bangkok. Rail is the more interesting arrival when a train is actually running to the station you need. Book that train on the State Railway’s own system, linked below. Inside the province, falls and the Mon Bridge require a car or a driver. Agree the day’s route in the morning. This page does not name a tour company.
