Ayutthaya travel guide

The island city of a former capital, a short trip north of Bangkok and a World Heritage historical park.

Where to base yourself

The Tourism Authority of Thailand places Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya about 86 kilometres north of Bangkok, on an island made by the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak, and Lopburi rivers. UNESCO lists the Historic City of Ayutthaya as a cultural World Heritage property, inscribed in 1991. The base is either Bangkok or the island. There is not much reason to invent a third.

Bangkok, out and backRight when you want one heritage day and your luggage is already in the capital. Leave early. The trade-off is a tired return and no evening in the ruins.
On the islandRight when the park is the point. You can start when it opens and stay into the late day. TAT also talks about food, from river prawns to noodles, which is easier if you are not watching a return clock.
A riverside edgeUseful if you want to be near the boat landings for a temple outside the main cluster. Check the actual walking distance. The rivers are boundaries, not decorations.

Places and experiences

Inside the historical park

  • The Historical Park itself. TAT calls Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park a UNESCO World Heritage site and describes restored ruins in and around the city. A 9 January 2020 TAT article describes a large archaeological area and daily opening hours that were current then. Do not treat that 2020 fee or clock as today’s rule. Ask the park.
  • The architecture, read properly. TAT describes a mix of Khmer and early Sukhothai influence: prangs with a Khmer lineage, and more pointed stupas it links to Sukhothai. You do not need a textbook. You do need to look up once you know what you are seeing.

Beyond a single courtyard

  • Wat Phanan Choeng. TAT lists Wat Phananchoengworawiharn among the highlights. It sits with the river geography, so plan it as its own stop, not as a doorway you pass on the way to lunch.
  • Khun Phaen House. TAT lists Khum Khun Phaen. Use it for a different kind of historic building after the brick ruins, and confirm it is open.
  • The rivers as the map. The island is the orientation tool. If a temple is off the island, give it a boat or a ride. Do not string five off-island names into one hour.
  • Food, as TAT frames it. The destination page treats food as part of the visit, not an afterthought. Leave a meal inside the day instead of eating on the bus back to Bangkok.

A one-day and a two-day pace

One day from Bangkok: two or three sites inside the park, one of them Wat Phanan Choeng if the boat or the ride is simple, then a meal, then the return. Stop before the group is counting ruins instead of seeing them.

Two days: the first for the main park at a walker’s pace, the second for Wat Phanan Choeng, Khun Phaen House, and whatever the first day proved was too far. Sleep on the island so the second morning is not another dawn transfer.

If the weather turns

The ruins are open to the sky. Heavy rain means shorter loops, covered spots where they exist, and a museum or house visit if one is open. Do not add Sukhothai to rescue a wet Ayutthaya day. Sukhothai is a different journey, described in Sukhothai and in the three-part itinerary.

Getting there and getting around

Road and rail both reach the province from Bangkok. Book trains only through the State Railway. On the island, bicycles and short rides are the usual way between gates. This page does not name a hire shop or a price. The Fine Arts Department publishes the park’s own contact page. That page is information. It is not an online ticket cart, and this edition does not quote a fee because published Fine Arts figures for the historical parks did not agree with each other.

Before you leave

  • Check which zones need a ticket today, at the park, not from a 2020 article.
  • Dress for sun and for temple rules. Shoulders and knees still matter in active shrines among the ruins.
  • Confirm the last practical return to Bangkok if you are not staying the night.
