Bangkok and the Eastern Gulf

Pattaya and Koh Larn

A Gulf beach resort close to Bangkok, with Koh Larn as a day on the water rather than a second city.

Where to base yourself

The Tourism Authority of Thailand places Pattaya on the Gulf of Thailand, about 150 kilometres southeast of Bangkok, and calls the drive about two hours. It also says local authorities have worked on the beaches and on a more family-friendly stay, while the nightlife remains part of the city’s reputation. Pick a base for the hours you intend to be awake.

Beach sideStay where you can walk to the sand if swimming and a simple dinner are the plan. You will still hear the resort. The trade-off is worth it if you do not want a taxi every time you leave the room.
Quieter edgesUse a beach north or south of the central strip when you want the sea without the busiest block. Check the actual beach name on a map before you book. This guide does not assign a “best” bay.
Koh Larn overnightTAT describes Koh Larn as a one-day trip, with minibuses and motorbike taxis on the island, and motorbike rental if you want it. Stay overnight only if you have a reason to be on the island after the day boats leave. Otherwise sleep in Pattaya and keep the island as a day.

Places and experiences

Pattaya itself

  • The beach and the water. TAT lists windsurfing, water-skiing, swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling, and sailing, plus trips to nearby islands. Choose one water plan a day. The beach is the point of staying here.
  • Pattaya Road at night. TAT says the road fills with places to eat, drink, and sit. That is a factual description of the resort, not a recommendation to spend the evening there. If you are with children, treat it as a street you can also choose not to walk.
  • Khao Chi Chan. TAT names the Buddha mountain and publishes hours of 06:00 to 18:00 on its Pattaya page. Confirm those hours before you go. The same note says to dress modestly, follow the rules, and not get too close to the figure.
  • A non-beach activity, sparingly. TAT also mentions golf, cycling, Muay Thai, and other resort activities. They are optional. They are not why the Gulf is here.

Koh Larn

  • The island as a day. TAT says you can visit Koh Larn in a day. Build the day around the boat out, one beach, and the boat back. Do not add Khao Chi Chan on the same afternoon.
  • Getting around the island. Minibuses and motorbike taxis are the transport TAT mentions, with rental motorbikes for riders who want them. A helmet and a short route beat a lap of the island at speed.
  • Seafood with a limit. TAT calls fresh seafood one of Pattaya’s draws. Eat it. Do not plan the island day so tightly that the meal becomes a sprint back to a pier you have not checked.

A two-day pace

  1. Day one, the beach you can walk to. Swim, eat, and learn the pier you would use for Koh Larn. Evening on the beach side rather than a long night if the boat is early.
  2. Day two, Koh Larn or Khao Chi Chan. One of them. If the sea is unsettled, take the mountain and leave the island.

A third day is a second beach morning or the plan you skipped. It is also the day that keeps a Bangkok flight from sitting on top of a boat.

If the weather turns

Koh Larn is the plan that fails first. Wind and a cancelled boat are a reason to switch to Khao Chi Chan or simply the Pattaya beach, not a reason to hunt a rougher crossing. Confirm the boat with the operator that morning. This page does not name a ferry brand or a fare.

Getting there and getting around

Road from Bangkok is the usual approach; TAT’s “about two hours” is a description, not a promise in weekend traffic. There is no need for a domestic flight. On Koh Larn, use the island transport TAT names and agree the fare before you ride if there is no meter. Do not assume a Pattaya beach vendor is an official ticket office.

Before you leave

  • Reconfirm Khao Chi Chan’s hours and rules. The 06:00–18:00 note is TAT’s published text, and published hours change.
  • Ask the boat operator about the last return before you commit to Koh Larn.
  • Modest dress still applies at the Buddha mountain.
  • This is not a checkout. Thailand Explorer does not sell Pattaya rooms, island transfers, or show tickets.
