Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai travel guide

A northern starting point for Lanna culture and highland landscapes, at a slower pace than a beach week.

Where to base yourself

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Chiang Mai as nature blended with Lanna culture, and it names the streets and mountains that should decide the base. Stay where tomorrow’s plan actually is.

Thapae and the old cityChoose this when the trip is temples, the evening market, and walking. TAT points to Thapae Walking Street for local life and handmade goods. The trade-off is that Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon both start with a ride out.
NimmanhaeminTAT names Nimmanhaemin Road for art shops, local food, and contemporary culture. Stay here when cafes and shops are the daytime plan. It is a weaker base if you want to walk to Thapae at dusk without a ride.
Toward the mountainsUse a night nearer the hills only for a specific dawn, such as Doi Inthanon or a Mae Kampong homestay. TAT describes Mae Kampong as an ecotourism homestay and Doi Pui for Hmong villages. Confirm the homestay directly. Do not assume a mountain room is a better city base.

Places and experiences

The city

  • Phra That Doi Suthep. TAT calls worship at Phra That Doi Suthep a defining Chiang Mai activity and a landmark for local people. Go for the temple, not for a guaranteed view. Dress modestly and read the rules at the gate.
  • Thapae Walking Street. TAT recommends it for everyday life and handmade goods. It is an evening plan. Check which nights it runs before you build dinner around it.
  • Nimmanhaemin Road. Use it for the contemporary side TAT describes: shops, food, and culture in one district. It is not a substitute for the temples.

Gardens and the near hills

  • Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden and Rajapruek Royal Park. TAT groups both as places to see plant collections. Pick one if the day is already carrying Doi Suthep. They are not the same gate.
  • Doi Pui and Mae Kampong. TAT cites Hmong villages at Doi Pui and a homestay style of visit at Mae Kampong. These are half-days with a host or a driver, not a quick stop between cafes.

The high mountains

  • Doi Inthanon. TAT describes the summit as the highest point in Thailand. That is the reason to go, and the reason to give it a day of its own. Confirm access and the national-park ticket on the day. This guide does not quote a fee.
  • Doi Ang Khang. TAT points to rice fields, cool air, and the giant tiger flower. Flowers are seasonal. If the flower is the reason, check what is actually in bloom before you commit the day.

A three-day pace

This is an editorial pace, not a tour.

  1. Day one, the city. Thapae in daylight, one temple compound you can walk to, and the walking street if it is running. Leave Nimman for the late afternoon only if you still have energy.
  2. Day two, Doi Suthep and one garden. Morning at Phra That Doi Suthep. Add either the botanical garden or Rajapruek, not both, and not Doi Inthanon.
  3. Day three, one mountain. Doi Inthanon or Doi Ang Khang or Mae Kampong. One. The return eats the evening.

If the weather turns

Swap the mountain day for Nimmanhaemin, the walking street, and a garden with easier access. Do not “quickly” add Doi Inthanon after a late Doi Suthep morning. If the air looks poor, treat the summit as optional and stay with indoor or old-city plans. TAT does not publish a personal air-quality forecast on the destination page; check a current official or meteorological source the day before.

Getting there and getting around

Chiang Mai is a flight or a long rail or road day from Bangkok. Book rail on the State Railway’s own system, D-Ticket, and treat any other seller as a reseller. In town, the old city rewards walking. Mountains need a car, a hired ride, or a tour you have read carefully. This page does not name inclusions.

Before you leave

  • Dress modestly at temples and follow the posted rules. TAT’s visitor notes are the right starting page.
  • Confirm Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon access on the day. Hours and fees are not listed here because they change.
  • If a national park asks for a time slot, the Thai government’s QueQ note describes advance tickets for parks. Check the app for the specific park.
  • The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a national entry step, not a Chiang Mai ticket. See First trip.
