A Gulf island between Samui and Tao, known for a monthly party and for beaches that are not the party.
Where to base yourself
The Tourism Authority of Thailand places Ko Pha-ngan about 100 kilometres offshore and about 15 kilometres north of Koh Samui, and says it is best known for a monthly full-moon party while many of its beaches are only moderately developed. That sentence is the whole planning problem.
South, near the party beachStay here only if the party is why you came. You will not sleep on that date. Other nights are merely busier than the north. TAT does not need to spell out the noise; the event is the point of the beach.
Thong Nai PanTAT names Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi. These are the bays to choose when you want a beach holiday that happens to share an island with a party. The ride from the main pier is part of the stay.
A west or north bay you have mappedTAT also names Rin Nok Beach. Use a specific bay, not “somewhere quiet.” Ask the boat or the taxi driver for that beach’s pier, because some bays are reached by a second boat when the road is poor.
Places and experiences
The full-moon party, or not. TAT names it as the island’s reputation. If you go, go on the date, with a plan for water, a way home, and a room you booked before the boat filled. If you do not go, be elsewhere on the island that night. There is no half-measure on the beach itself.
Thong Nai Pan Yai and Noi. Two bays, two moods. Walk one, swim the one whose sea is calmer that morning.
Rin Nok. A named beach on the TAT page. Use it as a destination, not as a rumor of “the east coast.”
Than Sadet waterfall. TAT lists Tan Sadet National Waterfall. It is the inland reason to leave the sand. Check the path after rain.
Coconut and fishing villages. TAT mentions local coconut farms and a fishery at Chok Chai or Chokechalam village, in the page’s wording. Go for a look at work, not for a staged show.
A boat toward Tao. TAT says a ferry on toward Koh Tao is a practical way to see reefs. That is a Koh Tao decision, not an afternoon ornament.
A temple or a viewpoint you can verify that week. TAT says the island also has temples and cultural sites. Pick one that a local office can name and open, rather than collecting pin-drops.
A three-day pace
Day one, the bay you slept in. No party, no waterfall, no Tao.
Day two, Than Sadet or a second bay. One inland or one coastal move.
Day three, the party or the deliberate absence. If the full moon falls on this trip, this is the day you either join it or you protect your sleep in the north. If it does not fall, repeat the best bay.
If the weather turns
Bays with a swell are not all equally safe. Stay out of the water and use the waterfall only if the track is walkable. Ferries to Samui and Tao move or cancel. Keep the last night on the island where your room already is, instead of gambling on a same-day hop. This page does not publish a monsoon calendar beyond what Weather quotes from TAT.
Getting there and getting around
Boats connect Phangan with Samui and with the mainland piers that serve the Gulf. Confirm the pier on the ticket. On the island, taxis and motorbikes cover the bays. The Samui warning about helmets and sober riding applies on these roads, which are hillier than a beach photo suggests. Do not ride back from the party.
Before you leave
Check the full-moon date on a calendar you trust, then the boat and the room. The party is monthly; the boats are not infinite.
Agree taxi fares to remote bays before you leave the pier.
This site does not sell party tickets, boat seats, or bungalows.
